They also choose to alternately play the bassist and drummer of their respective groups: Aaron Bell and Sam Woodyard (from the Duke rhythm section), and Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones (from the Trane rhythm section). Ellington is a jazz star right now. Coltrane boasts of being played in the Miles Davis group and in the Thelonious Monk quartet.
