John William Coltrane was born in Hamlet on 23 September 1926 and died prematurely in New York on 17 July 1967; he was among the greatest saxophonists in the history of jazz.

Column of the modal genre of the sixties, influences numerous musicians who followed him.

With him the period of bop ends and that of free jazz begins.

The African Orthodox Church canonized him with the name of Saint John William Coltrane and the church of San Francisco dedicated to him the Saint John William Coltrane African Orthodox Church playing his music and prayers in their own liturgy.
