The album collects material recorded four years prior to its release, when Monk and Coltrane worked together.
It was assembled by the Jazzland Records label after the discovery of three songs from three different sessions recorded in the studio by the Monk Quartet together with Coltraine in July 1957.
To complete the release, two tracks previously excluded from the Monk's Music album, recorded a month earlier, and one from the Tholonious Himself album, recorded in April, are included. The last track on the album, Functional, is a solo piano piece by Monk.
